Jesus + Canada = Trouble
Jesus of Montreal is a modern day remake of the Passion of Jesus. The basic plot outline is that a group of actors decide to put on a play that is more than unorthodox. While the play is readily accepted by the community, the Church feels that it is bad, and cancels it. The characters seem to go through a Passion-like experience themselves throughout the movie. Jesus said many things during his lifetime that, though embraced by many of the public, were turned away and deemed to be blasphemous by the High Priests. This movie seems to address that aspect of Jesus' life; that ideas are counter-cultural and against the mainstream worldview. The oppression that the main character, Daniel, and all the other actors face is obviously unfair, and I think that it represents much of what we are called to do today. To quote Jesus himself: "Blessed are those who are persecuted for my sake..."
